How to keep Norwalk skunks out of my garden

Norwalk skunks will enter your property in search of food. This is made worse by garbage cans and pet food that is left out. They can smell it and will go in search of their next meal. Once they have determined that it could be a source of food, they might consider nesting there.

Keeping them out permanently
• Close all access points that allow them to enter. If you have a big problem, it might be advisable to fence in your property. Make sure that the fence is able to keep out the skunks. They are smallish creatures and will be able to fit through spaces that are too big.
• Put all food away. This includes pet food, bird feeders and trash cans. They are scavengers and in urban areas they rely on humans for food. They will enter anywhere that they think they might be able to find nourishment.
• Use motion activated lights. Once the skunks enter the area that is monitored it will be scared away.
• Motion activated sprinklers. When the skunk enters the area, a sprinkler will be activated. The water will frighten them and they should run off.
• Close up all holes where they can nest. It is important to make sure they have no place to hide. If they are able to get under your porch or house, they will build a den. Once they breed you will have an even harder time getting rid of them.
• Cut back tall hedges and bushes. This will eliminate spaces for them to hide. Norwalk skunks are nocturnal and will hide until it becomes dark.
• Use skunk repellent. There are various repellents on the market. You can even purchase predator urine. This will fool the skunks into believing that they are in danger.
• Make sure that you have no insect infestations. Connecticut kunks eat a variety of insects, and this will serve as a source of food for them. By removing all infestations, you will cut off their food supply.
• Fill up their holes with sand. Make sure to check whether there are kittens present before you do this. If they have nowhere to live, they will move on.
• If all else fails, trap them. You might need to trap the Norwalk skunks and relocate them to a more desirable area. Make sure that you do not get sprayed while you are relocating them.
